WELCOME HUB
We believe that welcome hubs are essential spaces for communities across the UK — places where the work of welcome truly comes to life. In a time of shrinking resources and growing need, it’s vital that this local infrastructure remains alive and well.
Hubs are where local people and newcomers can come together over a cup of tea, share stories, practise English, swap recipes, donate clothing or household items, and volunteer their time to support others. They are places of compassion and connection — where someone can sit with another in pain or laugh together in the joyful moments that remind us what community really means.
Initiatives like Pickwell Pedals — a bike project run by one of our amazing volunteers — give newcomers essential transport and independence, while creating opportunities for connection and shared purpose. Whether through providing housing, building community projects, or supporting volunteers, we believe welcome and belonging should be available to everyone who calls the UK home.
Settle is The Pickwell Foundation’s own dedicated welcome hub in the heart of Barnstaple, North Devon. It’s a place where all the communities we support can come together, feel safe, and belong. More than just a hub, Settle is where connections grow — through ongoing casework with families and individuals, English language (ESOL) classes, youth nights, shared cooking, workshops, cultural events, and much more.
The Pickwell Foundation is partnered with the Local Authority as an ESOL provider, offering English language learning through both structured classes and informal conversation sessions within our hub.
Always evolving, Settle is designed to be a supportive, inclusive, and heart-warming space where people can meet, learn, share, and celebrate together. It is a true reflection of our mission: creating community and building brighter futures.
Our welcome hub sit within a wider commitment to caring for the whole community — from newcomers finding safety to local people rebuilding stability after homelessness or hardship.
Normally, we would share a map and our address here so that visitors can easily find us. However, due to some recent tensions, we’re currently unable to make our exact location public. Please know that you are absolutely welcome to visit — just contact the team member you’re already in touch with, or email info@thepickwellfoundation.org.uk, or call us on 01271 649108 and we’ll be happy to share directions and arrange a visit.
