AFGHAN RESETTLEMENT

The Afghan resettlement schemes were created to recognise and protect Afghan families whose lives were placed at risk — including those who supported British forces, as well as others facing persecution and danger under Taliban rule. These programmes offer individuals and their families the chance to rebuild their lives in safety and stability here in the UK.

Since 2023, The Pickwell Foundation has worked in partnership with North Devon Council — and increasingly with other local authorities nationwide — to welcome Afghan families. Together with our dedicated caseworkers and volunteers, we support families as they find their feet: from housing and education to employment, English language learning, and community connection.

As part of our national leadership, we also lead the Afghan Welcome Project, the second phase of the Government’s Communities for Afghans (CFA) scheme. This consortium-led initiative supports 125 Afghan families across the UK, using a values-driven model that combines local expertise with national coordination.

This wrap-around approach ensures families not only feel safe but also have the opportunity to thrive and become independent members of the community. A great example of this community-led welcome was demonstrated through our partnership with Libraries Unlimited on the Gatherers Project.
